A sheriff’s SWAT team pumped tear gas into a Hacienda Heights residence Tuesday and flushed out an armed suspect, prompting his surrender after a standoff of more than five hours, authorities said.
Sheriff’s deputies were sent to a residence in the 1800 block of Doverglen Way at 8:25 p.m. Monday in response to a report of a disturbance, said Deputy Kelvin Moody of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau.
The caller, who lives at the location, told arriving deputies that the suspect — whose identity was being withheld — refused to leave the residence.
A standoff ensued, prompting the deployment of SWAT deputies and a crisis negotiation team as well as the evacuation of surrounding homes, authorities said. No one other than the suspect was in the residence.
After several verbal attempts to persuade the suspect to surrender, tear gas was deployed and the suspect, who was armed with a handgun, surrendered, authorities announced at 1:30 a.m.
The area was deemed safe and all neighborhood evacuees were allowed to return to their homes, Moody said.
