A 22-year-old speeding motorist was killed Tuesday in a single-vehicle crash in an unincorporated area near Whittier.
The driver was later identified as Manuel Vazquez of El Monte, according to the California Highway Patrol and investigator Rudy Molano of the coroner’s office.
The Los Angeles County Fire Department was dispatched at 2:13 a.m. to 3888 S. Workman Mill Road in response to a report of a vehicle slamming into a wall, department dispatch supervisor Ed Pickett said.
Vazquez was speeding northbound on Workman Mill Road and lost control of his 2004 Honda Civic as it was moving along a curve on the roadway, the California Highway Patrol reported.
The car veered to the right and struck the raised concrete curb bordering the road, CHP officers said. The Honda continued over the curb and struck a chain link fence, then a large brick and concrete pillar.
Vazquez was pronounced dead at the scene, Pickett said.
