The county coroner Wednesday released the name of a man killed in a two-car crash in Coachella on Tuesday.
Gilberto Cardenas, 64, of Coachella, died at the scene of the 4:46 p.m. collision at the intersection of Avenue 50 and Van Buren Street.
Cardenas was southbound on Van Buren Street when his Ford sedan was broadsided within the intersection by a white Nissan heading west on Avenue 50, according to authorities. Firefighters had to use the “Jaws of Life” to cut through the mangled wreckage, said Jody Hagemann of the Riverside County Fire Department.
The Nissan’s driver suffered minor injuries, according to sheriff’s Sgt. Robert Castro.
The cause of the crash remained under investigation, but Castro said alcohol and drugs did not appear to be factors.
Anyone who may have witnessed the crash or has any information that would assist investigators was asked to call Officer Palmer of the sheriff’s Thermal station at (760) 863-8990, or Coachella Valley Crime Stoppers at (760) 341-7867 to report anonymously.
