Police sought the public’s help Thursday finding a hit-and-run driver whose vehicle struck and killed a 26-year-old Oregon man who was visiting family in South Los Angeles.
Michael Jordan Strom of Salem, Oregon, was in Los Angeles visiting his father and brother when he was struck about 7:50 p.m. Oct. 22 as he crossed Slauson Avenue west of Western Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.
He was hit by a newer-model, medium- to dark-colored Jeep Cherokee headed west on Slauson, police said. A description of the driver was not made available.
“The driver fled the scene without identifying themselves, and did not render aid to the victim as required by law,” according to police. “The vehicle was last seen northbound on St. Andrews Place, from Slauson Avenue, into the residential neighborhood.”
Paramedics took Strom to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead six days later.
A wake will be held for the young man Friday in Salem and his funeral will follow on Saturday in Kelzer, Oregon.
Anyone with information that could help identify the driver was urged to call (323) 421-2500 to speak with detectives. Tipsters could be eligible for a reward of up to $50,000.
After-hours and weekend calls should be directed to the watch commander of the LAPD’s South Traffic Division at (323) 421-2577. Anonymous tips can be submitted through Crime Stoppers by calling (800) 222-TIPS.
