Glendale’s Police Chief Robert Castro is retiring after a 32-year law enforcement career, authorities said Saturday.

Castro, who dedicated his last four years of service to the Glendale Police Department, said his retirement will become effective Dec. 29. Deputy Police Chief Carl Povalitis will be appointed as interim police chief effective Dec. 30, officials said.

“I am extremely proud of all of you who have worked hard and supported me to achieve the vision of making the Glendale Police Department the premiere law enforcement agency it is. I am confident the foundation we have built will ensure even greater successes in the future. Thank you for allowing me the great privilege of serving as your police chief,” Castro said in a statement.

Povalitis began his career with Glendale in 1990 and worked in many facets of the department before he was promoted to captain in 2010.  He was appointed to the position of deputy chief in September 2013, officials said.

“As a dedicated 27-year veteran, I know Carl will serve the Glendale Police Department and its members with honor while providing the best possible service to the residents of Glendale,” said Glendale’s Interim City Manager Yasmin Beers.
