Los Angeles police were searching Monday for whoever fired a shot that fell back to earth hitting a 9-year-old boy during a New Year’s Eve fireworks celebration in South Los Angeles.

The shooting injury took place about 12:25 a.m. in the 8800 block of Baring Cross Avenue, according to LAPD Lt. Jamie Bennett of Southeast Division.

The youngster, whose name was not released was hit in the shoulder, Bennett said. He was transported to a hospital where he was treated and released.

“We were very lucky,” Bennett said. “It could have been much worse for the boy.”

Bennett said detectives were searching for the gunman who would face serious charges if he or she is found.
