Police Tuesday investigated an officer-involved shooting that left one man dead in South Los Angeles.
The OIS was reported just after 6 p.m. Monday, at the intersection of San Pedro Street and Florence Avenue, according to the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
Officers with the LAPD’s Metro Division spotted a car allegedly being driven erratically in the area of Florence Avenue and Main Street and began following the vehicle east on Florence, a department spokeswoman said. The car then collided with two vehicles before striking a light pole, according to LAPD Detective Meghan Aguilar.
The driver was allegedly armed and an officer-involved shooting occurred, Aguilar said. The suspect was struck and firefighters pronounced him dead at the scene, Aguilar said. The man’s name was withheld pending family notification.
Police declined to reveal the exact circumstances surrounding the shooting or what actually led up to the OIS.
A firearm was located near the vehicle, Aguilar said.
The occupants of the two vehicles struck by the suspect’s car sustained only minor injuries and were not taken to a hospital, Aguilar said.
The fatal OIS was being investigated by the LAPD’s Force Investigation Division, the LAPD’s Inspector General’s office and the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Justice System Integrity Division shooting team.
