A teenage girl was sexually assaulted as she and two friends tried to get away from a man who exposed himself in a grocery store parking lot in Manhattan Beach, authorities said Saturday.

It was reported about 9:35 p.m. Friday near Third Street and Valley Drive, Manhattan Beach Police Sgt. Tim Zins said.

The three girls were walking through a Vons parking lot at 410 Manhattan Beach Blvd. when they saw the man in his car, Zins said. “The suspect called out to the girls but they ignored him and continued walking into the store.”

The girls remained in the store until they thought the man had left the area, the sergeant said. They walked south on Valley Drive.

“As the girls approached the area of Third Street and Valley Drive the same suspect came up from behind them, shoved one of the girls to the ground and sexually assaulted her,” Zins said. “One of the other girls began punching the suspect until he released her.”

At about 9:50 p.m. police received a call of a male exposing himself around 35th Street and Flournoy Road, he said.

The girls described the suspect as Middle Eastern or Asian, about 20-30 years old, with dark skin, wearing a red and black flannel shirt. He was driving a dark four-door sedan with an Uber sticker on the front passenger side window.

A similar vehicle was described in the Flournoy Road report.

Area residents were asked to check home surveillance video to see if they captured the suspect or his vehicle. Anyone with information was asked to call Detective Aleina Smith at (310) 802-5133.
