Authorities Thursday identified a 24-year-old driver who died when another motorist ran over metal debris, sending it crashing through the windshield of his vehicle on the westbound Foothill (210) Freeway in Duarte.

Stace Woodward, 24, of Eastvale in Riverside County, died at the scene about 12:45 p.m. Wednesday at Buena Vista Street, according to the coroner’s office.

Woodward was driving a 2014 Volkswagen in the No. 4 lane when a tan pickup truck or SUV ahead of him in the No. 3 lane ran over and kicked up metal debris, the California Highway Patrol reported.

“The metal debris entered the Volkswagen through the windshield,” striking Woodward, said CHP Officer Rodrigo Jimenez.

Woodward’s passenger, a 25-year-old Upland man, was not injured, he said.

“The passenger immediately took control of the Volkswagen and brought the vehicle to a stop at the Buena Vista Street off-ramp,” Jimenez said. “The passenger attempted first aid until (the) Los Angeles County Fire Department arrived.”

Investigators are hoping to locate the driver who ran over the debris, who is not regarded as having committed a crime, in order to find out more about what happened, Jimenez said.

Anyone with information on the case was urged to call Officer Kyle Croxford at the CHP’s Baldwin Park Area Office, (626) 338-1164.
