A 29-year-old Pomona man accused in the death of his 76-year-old grandfather pleaded not guilty Thursday to a murder charge.
Ricky Rene Maciel allegedly killed his grandfather, Raymond Maciel, during an April 17 argument at the home where he lived with his mother and grandparents, according to Deputy District Attorney Babette Huley.
Pomona police found the senior citizen unconscious after responding to a CPR call at the residence in the 1100 block of South Hamilton Boulevard. He died at a hospital.
Police said their initial investigation revealed that there had been some kind of altercation between family members in which the victim fell and hit his head.
Maciel was arrested that night and has remained behind bars since then. He’s due back in a Pomona courtroom June 14, when a date is scheduled to be set for a hearing to determine if there is sufficient evidence to allow the case against him to proceed to trial.
If convicted as charged, he could face up to 15 years to life in state prison, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
