Four Riverside County sheriff’s deputies were on paid administrative leave Monday due to their involvement in a shooting that left a 34-year-old pursuit suspect dead in Jurupa Valley.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred about 5:30 p.m. Sunday in the 9100 block of Bellegrave Avenue, near Glen Street, according to the sheriff’s department.

Deputy Robyn Flores said a patrol unit spotted the suspect, identified by the coroner’s office as Rudy Molina of Jurupa Valley, driving erratically near the intersection of 54th Street and Pedley Road.

The patrolmen attempted to stop the motorist on suspicion of driving under the influence, but he fled, prompting a chase, Flores said.

The pursuit traveled roughly two miles until the suspect stopped on Bellegrave Avenue and exited his vehicle, at which point the deputy-involved shooting occurred. It was unclear whether Molina leveled a gun at the law enforcement officers, or threatened them in some other way.

Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene.

No deputies or bystanders were injured.

The sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit assumed control of the investigation.

The deputies were placed on administrative leave as part of the department’s longstanding policy of temporarily removing personnel from patrol duties after they’ve been involved in a situation that resulted in deadly force.
