Spontaneous parties celebrating Mexico’s 1-0 victory over Germany in the World Cup Sunday prompted the sheriff’s department to send response teams to East Los Angeles Sunday, and Los Angeles police to send officers to Pacoima where three people were arrested..
Large crowds also were reported partying along Bristol Avenue in Santa Ana.
Some drivers were burning rubber amid boisterous crowds on Whittier Boulevard in East Los Angeles, prompting deputies to shut part of it down at midday.
One businesswoman told KNX Newsradio the crowds were too boisterous to keep her doors open. “I just didn’t appreciate the way they were putting people into danger,” she told KNX.
The Santa Ana World Cup parties were along a one mile section of Bristol Street, between First Street and Edinger Avenue.
Sgt. Javier Aceves told City News Service that Bristol was closed to vehicles at 1:40 p.m., due to the large number of people on it.
Meanwhile, large boisterous crowds of Mexico fans spilled out onto an area in Pacoima in the area of Laurel Canyon and Van Nuys boulevards, LAPD Sgt. Dan Bunch told CNS.
The LAPD responded with officers dressed in riot gear to contain the celebrations. CBS2 reported that three people were arrested during the partying, for public intoxication, reckless driving and possession of illegal fireworks. Bunch confirmed to CNS that arrests were made by officers from another division.
In Moscow, the underdog Mexican team stunned defending champ Germany in a match that ended midmorning, Los Angeles time.
