Police opened fire Friday on a man said to be a former UCLA basketball player, barricaded in a home in Sherman Oaks after he opened fire on officers from inside the residence, but it was not immediately clear if the suspect was hit.
ABC7 reported the suspect played for UCLA and briefly in the NBA. His name was not released.
Officers responded about 5 p.m. to the 4700 block of Tyrone Avenue, near Riverside Drive, to investigate a report of a man with a gun inside a residence, according to Officer Jeff Lee of the Los Angeles Police Department’s Media Relations Section.
The suspect barricaded himself in the home, so police set up a perimeter and called in a SWAT team, Lee said.
At some point, an officer-involved shooting occurred, but it was unclear if the suspect was struck, Lee said. Police announced on Twitter around 10:30 p.m. that during the initial encounter, the suspect fired at least one shot at officers from inside the home.
As of 9:45 p.m., the suspect remained holed up, the officer said.
“No officers were injured and all indications are that the suspect is still alive,” police tweeted about 9:30 p.m. “He’s believe to be armed and barricaded inside of a residence.”
The LAPD’s Crisis Negotiation Team was at the scene.
Some residents were evacuated and street closures were expected to last for several hours, police said.
