The coroner Monday publicly identified the suspect shot and killed by deputies responding to a robbery call at a housing complex in East Los Angeles.

He was Anthony Vargas, 21, of East Los Angeles.

The deputy-involved shooting occurred at 2:06 a.m. Sunday in the 500 block of Colonia De Las Magnolias, Deputy Tracy Koerner of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said. A semi-automatic weapon was recovered at the scene.

Deputies arriving at the housing complex were directed by the robbery victim to some people inside the complex, who ran in different directions when the deputies tried to talk to them, Deputy Kimberly Alexander of the Sheriff’s Information Bureau said.

Deputies called for backup, and one arriving deputy drove through the complex and came upon a suspect walking in a courtyard, Alexander said.

“The male looked at deputies and began to run. The male fell down and as the deputies attempted to detain him, a fight ensued between the deputies and the male,’ she said.

“A deputy-involved shooting occurred. The suspect was struck.’

The wounded suspect died, Deputy Joana Warren said.

Two other men suspected of robbery remained at large, Warren said.

Sheriff’s homicide detectives were investigating the shooting, along with investigators from the District Attorney’s Office and the Office of the Inspector General, Warren said.
