A baby boy with the umbilical cord wrapped around his neck was delivered and resuscitated by Glendale paramedics, it was announced Tuesday.

Crews responded to a call of a mother in labor about 1:30 a.m. Monday and realized upon arrival that the umbilical cord was wrapped around the baby’s neck and the boy was not breathing, according to a statement from the Glendale Fire Department.

Paramedic Leslie Scott guided the mom to the floor, worked to remove the umbilical cord from around the baby’s neck, and he delivered the boy, the statement said.

Scott and Paramedic Intern Mike Sevillano cut and clamped the cord and began life-saving efforts. As they continued to perform medical aid on the way to a hospital, the baby began to turn pink and began to breathe on his own, said the statement.

Just hours before the incident, Sevillano had taught a class on childbirth and neonatal resuscitation to firefighters and they were able to put those lessons to work almost immediately, the fire department said.

In addition to Scott and Sevillano, the department commended the other members of the department for their efforts in the childbirth and resuscitation of the child: Derek Tamburro, Kevin Stockton, Jessie Castro and ambulance operators Edgar Arana, Zachary Polte, Karapet Emishyan and Jose Navarro.
