A knife-wielding suspect wounded Monday afternoon in an officer-involved shooting in Torrance escaped on foot and remained at large for several hours before being found.
Officers initially responded about 11:30 a.m. to reports of a suspect destroying property at a home in the 18800 block of Florwood Avenue, but the man was gone by the time they arrived, according to Torrance Police Department Sgt. Ronald Harris.
Officers completed their vandalism investigation, but were called back to the home about 1 p.m. because the unidentified suspect had returned, Harris said.
“Shortly after the officers arrived, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect fled the scene on foot,” Harris said, adding that police were initially unsure whether the man had been wounded.
Officers set up a perimeter between 190th and 187th streets, from Prairie Avenue to Cordary Avenue and a SWAT team and K-9 unit joined the search.
The suspect was located about 5 p.m. and was treated at the scene for a gunshot wound before being taken to a hospital, Harris said.
An update on his condition was not immediately available.
Residents had been urged to avoid the area as the search was underway.
No officers were injured, Harris said.
