An officer-involved shooting in Torrance Monday afternoon triggered a search for a man believed to be armed with a knife.

Officers initially responded about 11:30 a.m. to reports of a suspect destroying property at a home in the 18800 block of Florwood, but the suspect was gone by the time they arrived, according to Torrance police Sgt. Ronald Harris.

Officers completed their vandalism investigation, but were called back to the home about 1 p.m. because the unidentified suspect had returned, Harris said.

“Shortly after the officers arrived, an officer-involved shooting occurred and the suspect fled the scene on foot, Harris said.

No officers were injured and it was unclear if the suspect was struck by the gunfire, he said.

Officers set up a perimeter between 190th and 187th streets, from Prairie Avenue to Cordary Avenue, Harris said. The suspect, believed to be within the containment area, was described as wearing black shorts and a black shirt, along with a black checkered hat.

Residents were urged to avoid the area as the search continued.
