Civil Rights Ordinance Expected to Pass L.A. City Council Committee

A proposed civil and human rights ordinance prohibiting discrimination and other forms of bigotry in Los Angeles is expected to be passed Thursday by the City Council’s Immigrant Affairs, Civil Rights, and Equity Committee.

The ordinance would also create a commission to investigate violations and was first proposed by Council President Herb Wesson and Councilman Gil Cedillo.

The motion to create the ordinance says the proposed law “must provide remedies easily accessible to victims of discrimination and include severe penalties to discourage the exploitation of and discrimination against the city’s residents.”

Cedillo, who is chair of the Immigrant Affairs Committee, told City News Service earlier this year that the proposed ordinance is “about protecting people, everybody, and their humanity, regardless of their legal status or their LGBTQ status or their gender or their age or their disabilities.”
