An Inglewood man who was involved in a drunken driving crash nearly a year ago that seriously injured his 10-year-old daughter was ordered Tuesday to perform 40 days of community labor and complete DUI and parenting classes.

Gil Paul Hernandez, 56, was also ordered to serve five years on probation in connection with his Sept. 5 no contest plea to a felony count of driving with a 0.08 percent or more blood-alcohol content and a misdemeanor count of child endangerment, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.

While he’s on probation, he cannot have any alcohol in his system and is prohibited from going anywhere where alcohol is the primary item being sold, according to the D.A.’s office.

Hernandez’s daughter — who was in the passenger seat — was seriously injured when he crashed his car into two vehicles while driving near 182nd Street and Prairie Avenue last Oct. 6, authorities said.

Witnesses said the black 1997 BMW 850 CI coupe was speeding south on Prairie Avenue, passing other vehicles, when it collided with a silver 2001 Chevrolet Impala, according to Torrance police Sgt. David Koenig. Hernandez then lost control of the BMW, which struck a curb before crossing into the northbound lanes of Prairie Avenue, where it collided with a Toyota Camry.

Prairie Avenue was closed in both directions between 182nd Street and Artesia Boulevard for nearly six hours as police investigated the collision.

Hernandez was arrested at the crash scene and spent a week behind bars before being released on bond.
