Attempted murder and vehicle theft charges were filed Wednesday against a woman accused of attacks on two other women in Palm Desert, allegedly striking one of them in the head with a mallet and attempting to run over the other victim with a car.

Erin Leah Richey, 39, of Palm Desert, pleaded not guilty to the charges stemming from the Saturday morning attack in the 77500 block of Mountain View Avenue.

Sheriff’s deputies allege she struck one victim in the head with a mallet “numerous times” and also attempted to slash her with a knife. Richey then allegedly took one of the victim’s vehicles, and as she was speeding away from the scene, attempted to run over another woman with the car.

The victim struck with the mallet was hospitalized with non-life threatening head injuries, according to the sheriff’s department, which did not give a motive or reveal whether the defendant knew the victims.

Richey was arrested later that day on Avenida Caballeros in Palm Springs and is being held in lieu of $2 million bail, according to county jail records.

She will return to court Jan. 30 for a felony settlement conference.
