A search was underway in Azusa Friday morning for an armed robbery suspect who struggled with police, then fled after at least one officer opened fire on him.

Officers responded about 12:40 a.m. to a possible burglary in the area of Irwindale and McKinley avenues and encountered an armed man who began to fight with officers, who then fired at the suspect, according to Lt. Robert Landeros of the Azusa Police Department.

The suspect was able to run away from officers and a containment area was set up and a SWAT team was brought in to search for the man, Landeros said.

It was unclear if the suspect fired any shots at the officers, Landeros said.

Irwindale Avenue between First and Gladstone streets was closed while police searched for the suspect. Anyone who uses Irwindale Avenue, south of the Foothill (210) Freeway, to get to work or school was asked to find an alternate route while police conducted their search.
