An investigation was underway Friday into the death of a 64-year-old woman who was struck by an SUV while riding a bicycle in Long Beach.
Officers were on patrol about 6 p.m. Thursday in the area of Willow Street and Golden Avenue when they came upon the scene of the collision, according to the Long Beach Police Department.
The victim was found lying on the northwest corner of the intersection. Fire department personnel took her to a hospital, where she was later pronounced dead, police said.
“Officers also contacted a 50-year-old male resident of Long Beach who was identified as the driver of a 1993 ford Explorer involved in the collision,” according to a police statement.
Police say the Ford was westbound on Willow Street approaching Golden Avenue as the traffic signal turned green, but when the SUV entered the intersection it struck the northbound bicyclist.
The driver remained at the scene and detectives don’t suspect he was driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
The woman’s name was withheld pending family notifications.
