A suspected drunk driver collided with an SUV at an intersection near Lake Elsinore Saturday morning and was seriously injured.

The crash occurred just before 3 a.m. at Blackwell Boulevard and Grand Avenue in the unincorporated community of Lakeland Village, according to the Riverside County Fire Department.

The suspect, Robert Brown, 35, of Lake Elsinore was driving a Ford Mustang and had been involved in an earlier hit-and-run crash with two parked cars on Railey Avenue, according to the California Highway Patrol.

He was fleeing eastbound on Blackwell Boulevard when he ran a red light at Grand Avenue and was broadsided by a southbound Honda Pilot carrying two people, the CHP said.

The impact caused the Mustang to spin out and Brown, who was not wearing a seatbelt, was partially ejected, Officer Mike Lassig said.

Brown suffered major trauma injuries and was hospitalized at Inland Valley Medical Center, where he remained in critical condition, according to the CHP.

The Pilot fell down an embankment and hit a large tree. Its driver, Kristin Paris, 24, of Lake Elsinore suffered moderate injuries and was hospitalized. The passenger, Derek Anderson, 35, of Lake Elsinore also suffered moderate injuries, but refused medical treatment.

Firefighters had to free one of the victims who became trapped in the resulting wreckage, fire officials said.

Brown was suspected to be driving under the influence of alcohol and will be arrested once he is released from the hospital, according to Lassig.
