A 57-year-old man was sentenced Thursday to nine years in state prison for trying to kill a Russian tourist at the Hollywood & Highland center.
Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Norm Shapiro sentenced Donald Offerman immediately following his no contest plea to one count each of attempted murder and assault with a deadly weapon.
Offerman also admitted an allegation that he caused great bodily injury.
The case stemmed from a Nov. 18, 2015, attack on the tourist, who was walking up a flight of stairs at the popular shopping and entertainment attraction with his family when Offerman came up behind them and slashed the man with a knife, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
Offerman then rushed toward the tourist’s family and swung the knife at them, and a struggle ensued between Offerman and the man, who was cut again by the knife as his family ran, police and prosecutors said.
Offerman was subdued and held at gunpoint by two off-duty New York police detectives who saw what happened and intervened.
About a month after the attack, he was found to be mentally incompetent to stand trial, but proceedings in the criminal case resumed last April after Offerman was determined to be mentally competent, according to the District Attorney’s Office.
