Two people, including a 24-year-old professional boxer, were shot when someone opened fire at a Riverside home just after midnight Sunday, and police Wednesday were looking for the shooter.
The gunfire was reported at 12:11 a.m. at a house in the 6400 block of Nidever Avenue, according to Riverside City police Officer Ryan Railsback.
“There were several occupants inside the house when the shooting occurred and two were struck by the gunfire,” he said.
Boxer Izaac Colunga was seriously injured and was hospitalized in critical condition, while the second person was treated for a minor injury and later released.
Colunga turned pro in 2018 and has won all four of his fights. His next fight was scheduled for March 15 in Dallas.
“It is a nightmare, a nightmare,” Izaac’s mother, Carrie Colunga, told ABC7. “You never want to be walking and see your son that was so energetic and full of energy and fun just everything positive about him and just laying there.”
Police did not release a suspect description or possible motive for the shooting, but they do not believe it was gang-related or that Colunga was a target.
Anyone with information about the shooting was urged to contact Detective Adrian Tillett at (951) 353-7105 or ATillett@riversideca.gov, or Detective Karla Beler at (951) 353-7138 or KBeler@riversideca.gov.
