An ex-convict accused of stabbing a 67-year-old Corona man must stand trial for attempted murder and other offenses, a judge ruled Friday.
Miguel Angel Flores, 31, could face more than 20 years in state prison if convicted of the 2018 attack in the 1000 block of Third Street, just south of the Riverside (91) Freeway.
Following a preliminary hearing at the Riverside Hall of Justice, Riverside County Superior Court Judge Ronald Taylor found there was sufficient evidence to warrant a trial on the attempted murder count, as well as sentence-enhancing weapon and great bodily injury allegations.
Taylor scheduled a post-preliminary hearing arraignment for April 17 and left Flores’ bail set at $1 million.
Flores is being held at the Byrd Detention Center in Murrieta.
According to Corona police Detective Andy Bryant, the attack occurred about 7:30 a.m. on Jan. 23, 2018, inside Flores’ home.
Flores and the victim, identified only as a Corona resident who is not related to Flores, had an unspecified conflict that culminated in the convicted felon pulling a knife and stabbing the man with it, Bryant said.
Bryant said officers were called to the location and found the victim “bleeding profusely from his injuries.”
The man was taken to Corona Regional Medical Center, where he underwent surgery and ultimately recovered, according to Bryant.
Flores was arrested at his residence without a struggle, Bryant said.
According to court records, he has prior convictions for assault with a firearm, driving under the influence of a controlled substance and burglary.
