A 53-year-old woman was in custody Friday in the death of a 76-year-old man struck and killed while legally crossing an intersection on foot, police said.

Rebecca Goehner of Desert Hot Springs was driving a 2002 Ford Mustang west on Mission Lakes Boulevard at West Drive in a 2002 Ford Mustang around 6:30 p.m. Thursday when she ran through a stop sign, according to Desert Hot Springs police Sgt. Daud Chang said.

“A 76-year-old male of Desert Hot Springs was walking in the marked crosswalk, southbound on the west side of the intersection,” Chang said. “Goehner failed to stop for the posted stop sign and did not see the pedestrian.”

The man was hit and died at the scene, Chang said.

Goehner was arrested at the intersection on suspicion of driving under the influence and gross vehicular manslaughter, police said.

Goehner is being held at the Larry D. Smith Correctional facility in Banning on $90,000 bail. She was scheduled to appear in court on April 30, jail records show.

The Desert Hot Springs Police Department Major Accident Investigation Team is investigating the collision and asks that anyone with information to call officers at 760-329-6411 at extension 375 or 372.
