A brush fire raced across 1,100 acres of terrain northeast of Fairmont in far north Los Angeles County Friday, prompting shelter-in-place orders for some residents.

The fire was reported at about 2:45 p.m. near Highway 138 and North 110th Street West with flames initially burning about 100 acres of brush, according to the Los Angeles County Fire Department.

The rapidly moving flames had increased to about 660 acres by 3:35 p.m., with fire crews upgrading the fire to a third alarm. The blaze then ballooned to 1,100 acres as it moved north toward Kern County.

Several community members in the area were advised to shelter in place. A stretch of Highway 138 was also shut down in the area.
