A man is in custody in Pomona Sunday morning after leading police and sheriff’s deputies on a chase across multiple cities and freeways, authorities said.
The incident began at 12:15 a.m. when Pomona police initiated a traffic stop while searching for a man who was reportedly wielding a knife, according to Pomona police Lt. Steve Congalton.
The man fled and reached speeds of up to 100 miles per hour as he traveled through Pomona and Montclair on freeways and surface streets and at one point ramming at least three police vehicles, Congalton said.
He drove the wrong way at least twice on freeways as the pursuit continued for roughly 20 minutes. The man finally stopped after one of the tires came off the vehicle and he ran up an embankment at the interchange between the 10 and 57 Freeways,
As the chase continued, Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputies and officers from the El Monte and Pasadena police departments joined the pursuit, providing support on the ground and with helicopters.
The man, identified as Jairo Guerrero, 28, of Montebello was charged with felony evading and assault with a deadly weapon and is being held in Pomona City Jail in lieu of $75,000 bail.
