A 54-year-old man was behind bars overnight for allegedly running through a red light at an intersection and hitting a car while driving under the influence.

Alex Marroquin of Indio is suspected of hitting the car around 4:30 p.m. Wednesday at the intersection of Avenue 48 and Dune Palms Road, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

When officers from the La Quinta Police Department arrived on scene shortly after, they determined that Marroquin was driving eastbound in a silver Nissan truck on Avenue 48 approaching the intersection at Dune Palms Road and failed to stop at the red light, deputies said. The truck then collided with a Nissan Altima, leaving its driver with moderate injuries.

The driver of the Nissan Altima was transported to a hospital for treatment.

The uninjured Marroquin was believed to be driving under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs at the time of the collision, deputies said, and was arrested about 45 minutes after the collision occurred.

He was booked into the Indio jail around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday and was released sometime Thursday morning on $50,000 bail, jail records show. He is scheduled in court on June 26.
