A fourth arraignment postponement was granted Friday for a 39-year-old man who allegedly threatened Palm Springs police with a knife and then attempted to run officers over with a car during an hourlong standoff.
Roberto Mendoza was detained about 10:30 p.m. April 25 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon and resisting arrest stemming from a standoff with police at an apartment complex in the 500 block of Rose Parks Road in Palm Springs, police said.
He was scheduled for court Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday, but officials said he was still not medically cleared. Details of his medical condition were not released.
On April 25, officers initially went to the scene in response to a “disturbance in a vehicle,” leading to a 75-minute standoff.
“As officers contacted Mendoza, he threatened the officers while holding a knife,” according to police. “Mendoza then reversed his vehicle and attempted to strike the officers with the vehicle. Officers were then able to surround Mendoza’s vehicle and prevent him from escaping.”
After more than an hour of negotiations with police, Mendoza surrendered and was taken into custody. Neither he nor any officers were injured at the scene.
The suspect was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on $30,000 bail, jail records showed.
