Police Tuesday arrested a 15-year-old Hemet boy suspected of calling a school and threatening to carry out a shooting, resulting in a campus lockdown.

The youth, whose name was not disclosed, made the call — ultimately determined to be a prank — about 1:15 p.m. Monday to the reception area at Diamond Valley Middle School, according to Hemet police.

Sgt. Derek Maddox said a clerk was told by the caller that he intended to “shoot up” the campus, prompting the staffer to immediately notify administrators, who summoned police.

Maddox said the campus was locked down as “numerous” patrol officers converged on the location and began a search of the grounds.

After the area was deemed safe, the lockdown was lifted, and school resource officers initiated an investigation in coordination with Hemet Unified School District officials, according to Maddox.

“The threat was determined to be a prank by a student who thought it would be funny to make the call,” the sergeant said.

He said the teenager was identified and taken into custody without incident on suspicion of a making a terrorist threat. Police did not say what school the boy attends.

He was booked into Riverside Juvenile Hall on the felony allegation.

“The Hemet Police Department and the Hemet Unified School District take all threats very seriously,” Maddox said.
