A 34-year-old Kentucky man who allegedly abducted his 5-week-old daughter last month during a custody dispute was apprehended in Riverside, where he’s being held without bail in the downtown jail.

Antwon Francois French was arrested by Riverside police officers Thursday afternoon on suspicion of being a fugitive from justice and was booked into the Robert Presley Detention Center.

French is awaiting extradition back to Fayette County, Kentucky.

According to Riverside Police Officer Ryan Railsback, the suspect snatched his daughter from her mother in Lexington on May 17 and fled in a Nissan Altima, eluding Kentucky law enforcement.

Riverside police investigators were alerted that French, traveling under the alias “Markell Moore,” might be in the Sycamore Highlands neighborhood, and SWAT members were requested to assist because the suspect was known to be armed and had a separate felony warrant related to possession of a sawed-off shotgun in Georgia, Railsback said.

A surveillance was established outside an apartment building in the 5800 block of Lochmoor Drive, and after about an hour of watching the building, French emerged, heading to his vehicle in the parking lot, where officers converged on him, taking him into custody without a struggle at about 6 p.m., according to the police spokesman.

He said the infant was located, unharmed, in a bedroom closet in French’s apartment, strapped into a car seat.

Arrangements were being made to reunite mother and child.
