An insurance company is seeking nearly $180,000 from the estate of a former UCLA basketball player as compensation for damage done by the athlete to a rented Sherman Oaks home before he killed himself at the end of a barricade incident in 2018.
Amco Insurance Co.’s Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit, filed Thursday, states that the company was forced to pay $178,475 to the owners of the home on Tyrone Avenue, where Tyler Honeycutt was staying.
Los Angeles police said at the time that Honeycutt was found dead after barricading himself for 11 hours on July 6, 2018. The Los Angeles County coroner’s office later ruled that Honeycutt, 27, had shot himself in the head.
The home was left with “severe property damage” to the contents, fixtures and furnishings, the suit states. Police were called to the home on a report that Honeycutt was brandishing a firearm, according to the suit.
Honeycutt played two seasons with UCLA. He was drafted by the Sacramento Kings in the second round of the 2011 NBA Draft and played 24 games over two seasons with the team. He most recently played in Russia.
