An officer-involved shooting that may have been prompted by a traffic crash in South Los Angeles left one person wounded and a Los Angeles Unified School District police officer hospitalized with unknown injuries.

Paramedics sent to Broadway and 86th Place about 11:10 a.m. took the LAUSD police officer and the other person to hospitals with unspecified injuries, according to the Los Angeles Fire Department.

A report from the scene indicated the officer suffered only a minor injury. He could be seen on video being placed on a gurney and taken to an ambulance. He was alert and talking.

A pickup truck with bullet holes in its windshield could be seen at the site of the shooting.

“An officer-involved shooting occurred today at approximately 11 a.m.,” Sgt. Juan Morales of the Los Angeles School Police Department said in a statement. “The OIS … occurred off campus. Schools and students are not affected.”

Other details were not immediately released. It was unclear what prompted the shooting.

ABC7 reported from the scene that the school police officer or his patrol vehicle may have been struck by the pickup, possibly prompting the shooting. Various reports indicated two people were in custody — the person who was shot and another person who was inside the pickup.
