Police Thursday were investigating the discovery of human remains behind a home in the South Los Angeles area.

Authorities were sent to the 100 block of West 49th Street, near Main Street, around 11 a.m. Wednesday after a resident at the property called to report the discovery of bones, according to the Los Angeles Police Department.

Lt. Ryan Rabbett told reporters at a press conference Thursday that an initial investigation determined that the partially buried bones were human remains.

“At this point, we can’t determine how long the victim has been deceased,” Rabbett said. “The remains were found behind the home in between two smaller structures, we’ll call them sheds.”

Rabbett said police are working closely with the coroner’s office to determine an identification. No one has been arrested. The investigation, active since Wednesday, is ongoing.
