A suspect was fatally wounded early Wednesday in Garden Grove when he got into a fight with an officer who had stopped to investigate the crash of a sports car into a pole, police said.
The officer-involved shooting occurred near Harbor Boulevard and Trask Avenue about 1:25 a.m. and left the lawman with non-life-threatening injuries, according to Garden Grove police Lt. Carl Whitney.
The officer was driving back to the police station to “do some paperwork” when he noticed that a 2017 Dodge Challenger had slammed into a pole, so he stopped to help the driver, Whitney said.
The officer radioed that he would be checking on a crash scene, “and the next thing he knows he’s in a fight with the guy and shortly after that shots were fired,” the lieutenant said.
“We have to look at videos and everything else to see what led up to the fight,” Whitney said.
The car had been reported stolen from a dealership on Harbor Boulevard in Santa Ana, he said.
The suspect was not carrying identification, Whitney said.
Both the officer and the suspect were taken to a hospital, where the suspect was pronounced dead about 2 a.m., Whitney said. The officer was released from the hospital within hours to recuperate at home, he said.
Garden Grove police detectives and investigators from the Orange County District Attorney’s office were investigating the circumstances of the shooting, he said.
