Authorities Thursday were investigating the fatal train crash in Monrovia that killed a woman and her 15-month-old son as a murder-suicide.

The victims were pronounced dead at the scene of the crash that occurred about 8:45 a.m. Wednesday near California Avenue and Duarte Road, according to Ramon Montenegro of the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department’s Transit Services Bureau.

The woman was identified by the coroner’s office as 36-year-old Therese Papagayo of Monrovia. The boy has been listed as unidentified by the coroner’s office, but KTLA5 reported that the child was Papagayo’s 15-month-old son.

The northbound Metro Rail train on the L Line, formerly known as the Gold Line, hit the pedestrians between the Monrovia and Duarte stations, Montenegro said.

Detectives were investigating the case as a murder-suicide, Monrovia Police Department Lt. Jaime Alfaro told KTLA5. City News Service was not able to reach Alfaro to confirm.

Rail service was interrupted for about five hours between the Monrovia and Duarte stations. Monrovia police were investigating the circumstances of the crash, assisted by personnel from the Sheriff’s Transit Services Bureau and Metro.
