Police Thursday arrested a suspect in a homicide in Boyle Heights that occurred just before an officer-involved shooting, and investigators continued their efforts to find at least one other suspect in connection with the crime.

Metropolitan Division officers patrolling near of East Cesar Chavez Avenue and North Savannah Street about 11 p.m. Wednesday witnessed a shooting in progress, according to Sgt. Frank Preciado of the Los Angeles Police Department.

“Officers immediately engaged the suspects, (and) an officer-involved shooting occurred,” a police statement said. “The suspects then fled the area, and a perimeter was established.”

At least one of the suspects was armed with a gun, Preciado said, adding that it was unknown if any suspects were struck by gunfire.

Police found two victims of the original shooting suffering from gunshot wounds, Preciado said. One died at the scene of his injuries and the second victim was taken to a hospital with stable vital signs, Preciado said.

During the perimeter seach, a suspect was arrested in connection with the homicide, the LAPD reported. The suspect’s name was not immediately released.

The investigation was continuing, and anyone with information on the case was urged to call 877-LAPD-247.
