A suspect who was possibly armed with a hammer was killed Monday in a deputy-involved shooting in Laguna Niguel.

Deputies responded to a call of a disturbance between a man and a woman about 12:30 p.m. in the 40 block of Coral Sea, near Golden Lantern, according to Carrie Braun of the Orange County Sheriff’s Department.

Details about what precipitated the gunfire were sketchy. Braun said the man was believed to be wielding a hammer, though it was not clear if he threatened any deputies.

“That will be part of the ongoing investigation handled by the district attorney,” Braun said.

The man, who was not immediately identified, was pronounced dead at the scene. The woman was not injured, nor were any deputies, according to Braun.
