The driver of a suspected stolen Mercedes-Benz SUV who tried to run over a sheriff’s deputy was arrested Tuesday after a high-speed pursuit from Santa Clarita to Burbank.

Deputies attempted to pull over the suspect for a vehicle code violation near the intersection of Bouquet Canyon Road and Festividad Drive about 5 p.m. and when a deputy tried to contact the driver, the suspect attempted to run over the deputy, according to Shirley Miller, public information officer for the Los Angeles Sheriff’s Department’s Santa Clarita Valley Station.

Deputies began a pursuit near Bouquet Canyon and Vasquez Canyon roads, but canceled it after a short distance because of the high speeds. A department helicopter monitored the suspect’s location until the California Highway Patrol took over the pursuit, Miller said.

The suspect led officers on a chase, which reached speeds over 100 mph, from the Antelope Valley (14) Freeway to the Golden State (5) Freeway, and through residential areas in Burbank, according to broadcast reports.

The car’s trunk opened during the chase and several boxes fell out. It was not immediately clear what was in the boxes, or if the suspect dumped the cargo on purpose.

The chase ended about 5:45 p.m. when the car collided with a California Highway Patrol vehicle near West Monterey Avenue and North Myers Street.

The suspect, identified as a 29-year-old man from Los Angeles, ran from the vehicle, but was apprehended by officers and arrested, Miller said.

The vehicle was stolen in the Camarillo area and the suspect was being investigated by other agencies for other crimes, including grand theft, Miller said.

The deputy was not injured in the attempted assault, Miller said. No injuries to civilians were reported.
