A 58-year-old man suspected of gunning down his housemate near Lake Mathews was being held without bail Tuesday.

Carl Greg Small was arrested late Monday night and booked into the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside on suspicion of murder.

Riverside County sheriff’s Sgt. Steve Brosche said that about 11 p.m. Monday, Small was involved in an unspecified confrontation with 53-year-old Richard David Mondragon at 17004 Canyon Creek Court, near La Sierra Avenue, just north of the lake.

Brosche alleged that the suspect pulled a handgun and shot Mondragon once in the upper body. Witnesses called 911, and Small went into the front yard of the two-story residence to wait for patrol deputies to arrive, according to the sergeant.

He said the deputies encountered the suspect standing outside the house holding a gun that he dropped on command, after which he was taken into custody without a struggle.

Mondragon was clinging to life when deputies initiated CPR, but he died at Riverside Community Hospital soon after arrival, Brosche said.

According to public records, Mondragon may have been distantly related to Small, who has no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
