A man in his 30s was fatally wounded Saturday morning in El Monte, authorities said.

El Monte police officers responding a little before 1:10 a.m. to the 11400 block of Garvey Avenue, regarding an assault with a deadly weapon gunshot victim call, found a man suffering from a gunshot wound to the upper torso, the Sheriff’s Information Bureau reported.

Paramedics rushed him to an area hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

Detectives learned the victim was “potentially involved” in an altercation prior to the shooting, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, which was assisting El Monte police with the investigation.

“Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Homicide detectives are on scene processing the location and canvassing the area for potential witnesses and video surveillance,” according to a news statement.

Sheriff’s Homicide Bureau detectives urged anyone with any information regarding the shooting to call them at 323-890-5500 or Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
