A 53-year-old man was behind bars Wednesday for allegedly shooting and killing a 50-year-old Long Beach resident in his front yard.

Matthew Hak was gunned down Tuesday about 7 a.m. at his residence near the intersection of 10th Street and Cherry Avenue, according to the Long Beach Police Department. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The suspect, identified as Kontharo Kang of Long Beach, allegedly confronted Hak outside and shot him at least once in the upper body before driving away, according to police, who said gunfire also struck a residence, but no one inside was injured.

“The motive is believed to be an accusation of domestic violence and assault to Hak’s relatives,” police said.

The assault was reported on June 10 and the domestic violence incident on Aug. 4, according to police. They said both incidents remain under investigation and declined to elaborate.

Kang was taken into custody at a relative’s home in the 2800 block of East 63rd Street about 4:50 p.m. Tuesday, police said. He is being held at the Long Beach City Jail on $2 million bail, according to sheriff’s department records.
