A man who ran over and killed a 76-year-old pedestrian in Moreno Valley while driving under the influence was convicted Tuesday of felony vehicular manslaughter.
Following two days of deliberations, a Riverside jury found Roben Gaby Noujaim, 36, of Moreno Valley guilty of the manslaughter count, as well as driving under the influence resulting in great bodily injury and a misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of a controlled substance.
Noujaim, who is being held without bail at the Robert Presley Jail in Riverside, is slated to be sentenced on Jan. 8 at the Riverside Hall of Justice.
The defendant was arrested April 22 following a lengthy investigation by sheriff’s detectives into the September 2019 death of Lorenzo Romero, also of Moreno Valley.
Sheriff’s Deputy Rafael Lopez said the victim was walking on Graham Street, just north of Old Valley Drive, when he was struck by a sedan about 7:45 p.m. on Sept. 10, 2019. Paramedics pronounced him dead at the scene roughly 25 minutes later.
Noujaim did not flee and was taken into custody on the spot, but he was released from jail that week pending further investigation.
He had no documented prior felony convictions in Riverside County.
