An 80-year-old woman was struck and killed Friday by an SUV whose driver was attempting to exit a parking lot in Long Beach, police said.

The woman was squatting in a stall next to the 2007 Dodge Nitro. The driver had reversed out of a stall, then drove forward to exit, according to a preliminary investigation by the Long Beach Police Department.

The crash occurred about 3:15 p.m. in the 1300 block of Atlantic Avenue, near Anaheim Street, police said.

The 45-year-old man driving the SUV stopped and told a bystander to call 911 to report the crash. He stayed with the woman until Long Beach Fire Department personnel arrived and took her to a hospital, according to police.

The woman died of her injuries. Her name was withheld pending notification of her next of kin.

The man driving the SUV remained on scene and cooperated with the investigation. Neither impaired or distracted driving were contributing factors to the crash, police said.

Anyone with information about the crash can call LBPD Detective Shawn Loughlin or Detective Kevin Johansen at 562-570-7355. Tipsters can also call Crime Stoppers at 800-222-8477.
