A 23-year-old man suspected of breaking into a Banning home late last year and sexually assaulting a girl before her family members intervened was arrested in Georgia and is awaiting extradition to California, authorities said Friday.

Marquis Travian Washington of Rialto was taken into custody on a felony warrant near Atlanta last Friday, according to the Banning Police Department. He is expected to be returned to Riverside County in the coming weeks.

Banning police allege that on the afternoon of Dec. 15, the suspect forced his way into a residence in the 500 block of North Hathaway Street, near East George Street, and attacked a girl in her bedroom.

Relatives arrived within a few minutes of the break-in and interrupted the assault, at which point Washington allegedly bolted from the property, according to police. Patrol officers swarmed the location but were unable to find him.

The girl was treated for unspecified injuries.

Investigators soon identified Washington as the allegedly perpetrator, and an arrest warrant was issued, police said. The suspect was tracked down in Georgia and taken into custody without incident.
