Riverside County sheriff’s investigators were working Monday to identify the assailant responsible for the death of a 28-year-old man attacked south of Corona.

Pedro Cervantes was fatally wounded Saturday morning in the 19000 block of Washington Street, near Marilyn Drive, in the unincorporated community of El Cerrito, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.

Sgt. Steve Brosche said patrol deputies were called to the location about 6:30 a.m. to investigate reports of an assault and found Cervantes near a residence, suffering from life-threatening injuries.

Brosche declined to specify whether the victim was stabbed or shot, saying only that he had been assaulted.

Cervantes was taken to Corona Regional Medical Center, where he died a short time later.

A possible motive for the attack has not been disclosed.

Sheriff’s Central Homicide Unit detectives are still attempting to identify who was involved, Brosche said.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the unit at 951-955-2777.
