One of five people shot during a brawl involving a group of people at a Hemet home succumbed to her injuries, authorities said Wednesday.

The 27-year-old Hemet woman, whose name was not immediately released, was shot just before 6 p.m. Tuesday in the 1200 block of Valencia Avenue, near Elk Street.

Hemet police Lt. Michael Arellano said that a melee broke out for unspecified reasons, with mostly women exchanging blows. He said one or more parties opened fire with handguns, resulting in the five individuals being struck by bullets, including the 27-year-old victim, who suffered a head wound.

She was taken to Riverside University Medical Center in Moreno Valley, where she died overnight, according to Arellano.

A man at the property was hit in the leg and back, and another man was shot in the elbow. Both are in stable condition, according to the lieutenant.

Two other victims were taken by friends to Hemet Valley Hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening wounds.

“Investigators were on scene well into this morning, collecting evidence and conducting interviews,” Arellano said.

He said the circumstances behind the outbreak of violence remain unclear.

“There is no evidence … that the shootings are gang-related,” Arellano said.

No suspects have been identified.

Anyone with information was asked to contact the police department’s Homicide Unit at 951-765-2396.
