A suspect was taken into custody Tuesday after claiming he had explosives in a Downey neighborhood, prompting evacuations and street closures.
Downey Police Department officers responded to the area of Lakewood Boulevard and Florence Avenue at about 5 p.m. after receiving reports of the suspect’s claims, according to a department spokesperson.
The suspect was taken into custody by responding officers, though their name was not immediately released.
Several homes in the area were evacuated as a precaution and Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department bomb squad units were called to the scene to investigate and search for the alleged explosives, according to the Downey Police Department.
The area remained closed and residents were still kept from returning to their homes as of about 9:50 p.m.
